meI am a journalist writing primarily about agriculture for newspapers for the past 35 years. Before that… I milked cows, tended calves and graded beef cattle for auction market reports. I am also a mother and grandmother with three grown children: a teacher, restaurateur and homemaker. Our two sons and one daughter all like to cook!     Dumping milk is not my cup of tea and co-operatives need to get their “house in order” by speaking frankly to their members, outlining just what the cost of over-production means to the viability of the co-op. We must think long and hard about building more capacity (more equity deducts), until we are sure we have the market for more milk. I am finally seeing some movement in that direction.

  2. Ms. Bunting, very much enjoyed your in depth and correct report on this substitute protein that seems to be coming to the refrigerated section of our grocery outlets. I’m a lifelong Rancher in Eastern Oregon, past president of Oregon Cattlemans Association, and current board member of United States Cattlemans Association, that has and is for honest product identity, which includes Country Of Origin Labeling.

    I share with you, your deep concern (I believe I can read between your lines?) about the multinational conglomerates, with market manipulation, and monopolistic worldwide control of protein, that is eliminating the American Farmer and Rancher. How do you see a possible positive, forward thinking strategy to rebuild, revitalize our rural communities, while getting a viable/profitable price for our American commodities? I fear the genocide of our rural areas will continue if actions are not taken for correction. Sorry for my long palaver, but thought I’d reach out to you.
